new turbo and new injectors, have some questions

so i just got finished bullet proofing my truck and in the process i added a MTW stage 1 with billet wheel and some 175 stock nozzle injectors from sheldon at renegade. im still running the previous tune which is the SRL from matt for stock head bolts. truck has about and hour of idle time and about 15 miles since starting back up. drove it for the first time today and i have alot of black smoke both from a stop and rolling into it, high egts (over 1000 just merging on to interstate) and what i think is low boost (max of 25). talked to gearhead and they say i should be fine with the old tune. what should i be looking for to adjust ? i think the 175s should compliment the MTW stage 1 very nice. is this a hardware issue or tune? does it take time for the truck to relearn after batteries have been unhooked for almost 4 weeks? i thought id see more boost, possibly 30-33 range. any help in figuring this out would be greatly appreciated. thanks

It's all in the tune. No way 175's and a stage1 are going to run right on a tune for a stock truck.

That's what I thought but that not what Gearhead is telling me. Maybe I'll give tony a call and see what he can do

I just worked with Jody at DP for some pretty sweet MTW tunes. If you call him tell him I sent you (rob) with same turbo. We went back and forth a few times, but we got it right. My performance tune boosts into the mid 30s and no smoke. However my first couple tune attempts had low boost, lots of smoke, and high EGTs. I would love it if somebody else on here tried DP after running the latest fad and could see the improvement I have.

Yes. Previous tune was for stock turbo, stock injectors and head bolts.

Did you try running stock tune? I would expect smoke off the line but clearing up mid boost. Turbo boost should be descent.

I have no t run stock yet. Smoke does clear up most of the way, but anytime you get into the throttle it comes on. Does Jody have a website? Never heard of him. Boost is mid 20s

DP tuner dot com. Call the 800 number than dial 801 direct ext. He has been doing this for the good part of two decades. He tuned my 99.

It really sounds like you have a Leak watch around the turbo while someone mashes the go pedal, may help to look from underneath as well.

It's really easy to see at night with a flash light, ANY puff of smoke is lost Boost.

An Important question to ask is what Boost levels were you seeing with the Stock Turbo, as the Stage 1 will only mildly increase over that typically low 30's. some of our trucks are Boost Hogs 35+ while others can barely break 25. Why is anyone's guess.

As others have stated you CAN run the stock tunes with MTW Turbo's but once you have it optimally tuned for your injectors and turbo you'll realize the error of your ways of running stock not to mention be pissed at the guy or girl who told you to run stock. LOL
