ZOODAD: Pros and Cons
I had to run from E TX to Denver, from 68 degrees to at one point 9 degrees. Rolling along I had the nagging thought... suppose I run into freezing rain/snow.. with the Zoooooodad.. there is NOTHING preventing the filter from getting wet/freezing/clogging causing loss of mpg/hp/mobility!! (NEWS: Man found frozen in truck!
) Think I will fabricate a hinged cover called a 'Zoodad Flapper' that will be controlled by an upfitter switch that responds to a satellite signal from my gps (or maybe just a simple lever under the hood).

I did the zoodad install today and while shopping for parts I thought about that too. If you go to the hardware store, lighting section, where there are light switch face plates etc., you should be able to find an outlet plug face plate for out door outlets (double outlet). These are the ones with the flap that closes over the plugs. This would make a good frame, as most are made of some type of metal, and on some models, you can actually pop the covers on and off. Problem solved. As for the wire mesh to prevent bugs and debris, I simply used a wire mesh trap for a kitchen sink (.96 cents). The mesh pulls right out of the round frame and it is actually square. I cut to fit using household siccors. Worked fine. |

I live in Oklahoma -- we have very wet/rainy thunderstorms -- my filter has YET to get wet.. All I've had are a few extra bugs get in there.. With the 6.0 -- I've only heard of very FEW people even having a damp filter after a large storm with heavy rain... but here's what my Zoodad looks like now with the cover that Rwalker29 made for me ![]()

I've got the AFE Stage II (canister version) and the intake tube sticks out almost through the hole that I cut. I just put an AFE pre-filter sock on the end of the tube and held it on with zip-ties. Works great to keep the bugs out and (hopefully) keep most of the water from spashing inside and getting the filter wet.

I was caught in a huge storm one day running from Tulsa to Oklahoma City down I-44. It was raining incredibly hard and I rolled right down the 'pike running 75-80mph and my filter never got damp. I had just done the Zoodad and was concerned and checked it at the Flyin J in OKC and was dry so no worries here!

I actually just cut a 7" by 3 1/2" piece of sheet metal, and put sticky back velcro tape on it, to cover the hole if it was raining hard, but Ive never had to use it, filter still has yet to get wet. hhhhmmm maybe its because it dosent rain in Vegas,,haha
