mufflers... to pack or not to pack??????

So i just saw this in another thread but i didnt want to hijack!

I have 06 with the 2003 turbo and love the whistle, i have the glass packed magnaflow muffler, however the drone is alomost unbearable at even a mild acceleration. I have tried no muffler and that was too loud.

Are non packed mufflers better for drone??
What brands are out there?? Donaldson? Hushpower from Flowmaster??? Does length play a role???? I mean the length of the muffler!

Enlighten me, I drive my truck for work everyday, approx 150 miles a day, i could use less drone!

Maybe the exhaust system is touching the cab or frame somewhere. I have the glass packed one, no CAT and can't anything inside. I have to lower the right rear window and get on it pretty hard to hear much exhaust note at all. Even then nothing from inside the cab.

Best example I can come up with is to watch these videos. Yes they are 5.9s but if you can hear the turbo whistle over the cummins howl your doing something right (even with upgraded turbos) in my opinion.

Here is my 40" donaldson muffler with my pieced together 4 inch exhaust This is a non packed muffler constructed with all metal:

And here is a packed diamond eye muffler:

Once the packing on the "packed muffler" burns out your looking at a hollowed eco can.

Also look into the FTE Resonator (unpacked as well). Resonators / Mufflers - FTE Diesel
Great reviews in the cummins world, unsure on the powerstroke application.

I can say the fte resonator kills the drone! I ran one for a couple of months but it was to quiet for me So it sits in the shop floor

I run a Donaldson muffler after a year of straight pipe. Couldn't be happier. Also sometimes the drone is from the exhaust echoing off the body of the truck that's why I run a turndown style tip. Plus it keeps the soot off my truck and whatever I'm pulling.

Recently installed a Banks turbo back exhaust on my 06. It's quiet and no drone what so ever. That's the main reason I chose it.
