So, Nate, what is the downside to this (referring to the turbos that require tuning)? This is new to me. I was under the assumption that all larger-than-stock turbos must be tuned to adjust for the newfound airflow, including adjusting the boost levels.

I'm asking because I am curious, I haven't been following the 6.0L game much recently. It seems I've missed a lot. That's some impressive info.

From what I've been reading , it has to do with back pressure and a lot of these type turbos have been grenading. I'm sure Nate will chime in though

Ahhhh, this makes perfect sense. Back in the day, large VGT's weren't common, as they only lasted a few thousand miles before grenading (because of higher backpressure). It's all coming together. So does this mean that a compound setup built off a VGT is now possible? Maybe VGT compounds?

Guys the OP is limited to a 2.5" compressor so that means nothing bigger than 63.5 mm inducer on the compressor side. This talk about the rcd 68 mm pmax and the mtw stage 3 is completely irrelevant. I would say that a GT3788VA sized charger is biggest he can go.

Large VGTs have been around for a while. Elite, TEC, and RCD have been selling there's for years now. The reason many of them were shortlived is mainly because they continue to use the same CHRA as the stock Turbo which is not designed for the larger heavier wheels. The extra weight and inherently high backpressure of every VGT put additional stress on the bearings.

Since we are on this derail, Nate, I have to say I do not understand why a big VGT's performance on the stock tune is so important to you. I can't think of any reason to install a performance Turbo and run it on stock tuning. I don't know what you mean when you say a Turbo makes so much boost naturally. Again, who cares? Its a VGT, it doesn't do anything naturally. It is supposed to be manipulated by the ECM. How a Turbo performs on a tune designed for a different Turbo doesn't mean squat. If you are trying to make the Point that the rcd 68 runs at higher backpressure than the stage 3, just say that. You don't have to be rocket scientist to figure out why.

Yea we should stick to the topic of the OP. Adam I guess that is what I am saying and I was just trying to offer an explanation even if it wasn't a very good one. There's a lot in your post I think would be good to discuss in a separate thread.
