ADRIAN MADE ME DO IT!!!!
Here is my y-pipe mod! I started doing this and a guy in my shop named Eddie or his race name is FAST EDDIE he's got a wicked new Shelby and 69 chevelle. He took it from me because he loves this stuff and this is how I got it back. I'm getting him lunch tomorrow!!

I think I can see some distortion on the flange ring from the welding. I'd be interested to know how well it fits/seals up against the turbo.

There is very little bit but I put it on and there is no gaps when clamped! I used hypoid grease and it contacted everywhere on turbo.

I spent some time this afternoon working on my Y pipe too. I will finish it up tomorrow. IMHO it looks like there is still plenty of work to do to that before I'd put on. I'd clean it up some more where the 2 pipes meet at the top and bottom as the welds still look like they need some more work. Right and left side of the last picture shows the areas pretty well. I really like the way he opened up the mouth there. That should make a significant difference in your spool up for sure. Be interested to see if it raises your boost any.
I'll post some pics up of mine when I finish them tomorrow. |

I'm having a friend help with mine. Instead of welding the grinding, we're going to try a lap patch over the divet, then grind out the original tube. That "plenum divider" is getting knocked down, too.

Not a good idea Karl. You need a solid fill that you can port into and contour the sides. Doing what you intend will most likely make the transition worse not better.

Without a picture, it may seem that way. But we're talking a lap patch just big enough to cover the offending indentation. However, if it does produce a convex/outward bulge, a little heat and a ball peen will massage it into place.
Trust me, I'm steppin in what your putting down. But we wanted to try a different approach. It's a spare anyway, experiment! Worst case scenario we cut out the patch, weld, and contour grind. sent from a dumb guy with a smart phone |
