Performance part assistance
Ok I will first start by saying sorry for the long read. So I need some advice on what I am doing wrong. I have a 2006 F-250/w 6.0L. I recently have installed a Volant cold air intake, custom diesel EGR delete, SCT touch screen xtreme, and a MBRP 4" turbo back straight exhaust. The main reason for buying all the mods was to lower my EGT, make towing my boat a bit better, and better MPG when driving around.
Stock I was getting 14-16 in the city not towing. When I installed all the mods and tuned the truck to the street pre-loaded tune I dropped to 9 MPG and every time i start the truck a thick cloud of white smoke blows out. I tried playing around with the tuner and re-loaded the stock tune. My MPG jumped to 20 MPG and no smoke and was running great then I guess the EGR code kicked in and I dropped to 11 MPG and the motor sounded muffled like it does when the EGR gets stuck closed or what ever. I then re-tuned the truck with the TRANS ONLY and deleted the ERG and the white smoke came back and MPG looks to be holding around 11. CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND WHY I CANT GET BETTER MPG AND WHAT IS THE SMOKE COMING OUT!!! |

I'd start by contacting Gear Heads, or Innovative Diesel for some custom tunes. Be sure to mention what you are observing, they may have some insights.

sounds like you reveiled a problem that wouldnt show up just stock

What problem do you think it might be? I am confused and there are no diesel shops around where I am so no help there.

Sometimes those tunes can mess with your gauge showing your MPG...
Are you actually running a tank of fuel through to get all your mpg figures? How do you know the difference in Mpg's between tunes??? |

I have a similar problem. Whenever I run a tune (performance, street, tow, or even trans only) with the EGR system disabled, I need like 4psi more boost to cruise down the hwy than compared to a tune with the EGR system enabled or just the regular stock tuning. (Nevermind the fact that the actual egr system and valve is not even on the truck) I also have a 2006 with vxcf4hb strategy.
I have spoken to Matt at Gearhead about this and he thinks it is because the ECM uses a different set of VGT tables with the EGR system disabled as compared to when it is enabled. IDK enough to say whether this is true or not but if it is only showing up when you have it tuned then I am willing to bet it is something to do with the tune. JMO He was confident though that he could correct it through tuning. |

I forgot to ask, do you have the EGR valve plugged into the truck?? If not try plugging it in and seeing what it does. I dont have mine anymore otherwise I would do it and see.

yes I have the EGR block off. I am not sure if it is just blowing out old stuff or what cause the smoke only comes out on start up. Im not to worried about the smoke mostly the MPG!

How much do you have to pay for custom tunes?

$50 for tunes from TSD. $75 for gearhead. $80 for innovatives
