Heads/Block question !

Dropped my truck off at shop for head gaskets & studs. Repairs shop started to talk about blocks can be washed out where gaskets leaked . Is this a common problem and if so ?? what do you do ?? Buff it down as clean as possible and hope they hold ?? O-Ring the block ?? I know some racers that do this without tearing down the short block and have the tools to cut them ..How often if any is this possible of happening ??

so < blocks are pretty stout ? and enough meat between cylinders not to worry about piting or slight erosion ?
