Most tuners require you program the truck.. it wont be 'shift on the fly' unless you get a banks or similar. And with a banks, you need the proper upgrades or you may very well mess something up due to high EGT's (exhaust gas temps).

An Superchips or similar is intended to be run on a stock truck, and as long as you don't tow on a performance setting I don't think you'll have trouble.
I would take some time and see if you can find an 05 or newer.

One thing that's important is don't romp on your truck when the engine is cold.

Hi,

The '03's did have problems in the beginning but then again, the motor was new and Ford hadn't worked out the glitches. The '03 has a different turbo than the other years that whistles very nicely and spools up faster, making it faster in general.

Mini Me, our race truck, is an '03. When we bought it, in 2003 it had been lemon law'd but that didn't stop DJ. Even the dealership was surprised when he installed an Xcal1 and drove it home (5 hours).

As mentioned before, as long as you don't romp on it all the time, change your oil every 4,000 miles and your fuel filters every 10,000 miles, you should be fine. Whatever truck you decide on, make sure you get an Oasis report. That will give you an indication of what problems the truck may have had in the past and whether they were simple or complicated, intermittent or isolated.

Good Luck on your new purchase!
Thanks,
Vivian

I've got a 03 6.0 and its treated me alright. I did have it in and out of the shop for oil leaks but I got a new short block out of it, and its been alright since but i've heard the 05's are faster off the line

I have a '03 with 130,000 miles on it. I bought it used at 70,000. Its a daily driver for me and bought for heavy towing. I run ministry trips pulling 10,000 - 12,000 on the hitch monthly through mountains of Appalachia - normally it runs well. One recent trip the high pressure oil injection pump failed stranding me in WVA (but I met the nicest of people - so friendly - it really ended up quite well).

Generally speaking - it's a great truck. I had a rash of oil leaks for a little while - Ford took care of them under warranty.

It pulls well, I have had 2.04 tons top soil in the bed - with no problems. It's a hard working daily driver.

I have heard the '03's were hit or miss - even the dealer in Elkins W. VA told me "you must have got one of the good ones".
