custom tuning?

Ok so here is a few questions I have about any and all sct tuners.

1. I know all these companies offer "custom" tunes but are they really "custom"? I mean is each tune really written for each truck? most if not all "custom" tuners only ask for your stratagey, they do not ask about egr or studs or anything else that i know of. I can see this happening for a truck with large amount of upgrades like injectors, head mods, turbo mods.

2. I f i buy an unlocked sct from someone and there stratagies
are diff then might what will happen if I try to use it on my truck? can the stratagies be changed on my truck to use the tunes?

if i am wrong please please forgive me I am kind of new to this whole thing.

They all have a base file they start with. Changes are made from there.

Most tuners assume you would tell them if you were modded beyond the basics.

They are custom to a point and the more mods you have done to the truck the more custom they become. If you buy a used one that is unlocked and has canned tunes, the canned tunes will work on your truck. The SCT tuner doesn't have a strategy in it, it simply reads the strategy from your truck.

i know Eric writes every tune for every truck.... and yes he asks for all the info and mods you have on your truck....

you cant use tunes that are not for your truck.. i mean you could but it would run like crap.... you need some specific for your strategy

the person selling the used sct says that when he ordered the "custom" tunes from one of the big name custom tuners they never asked for any info about the truck (studs, egr delete, and such) but was asked what kind of tunes he wanted to run. he ordered "street tune, tow tune, and extreme street tune" after he installed the custom tunes he then had studs and egr delete done. his truck was a MT and they didnt ask about what trans he had.

i'm pretty sure you are asked to fill out what what tunes you want and what modifications your truck has. if you don't fill it out they assume stock. studs doesn't really change a tune unless you want them to really up the power, studs are for reliability and support the higher pressures with tuning. and about the transmission, i bet they could tell by his strategy what he had a manual.
FYI you can order a street tune and ask for characteristics you want imputed in the tune. I like having the T/C stay locked when I let off the throttle in O/D drive (helps with freeway driving when you need to just let off for a sec and then get back on the throttle). If you don't know what you want you can ASK or you can use the tune and if you think you want an adjust talk to your tuner and they write you a new file. Sometimes it takes more than 1 try.
