Buying a used SCT..?

If I buy a used SCT off of ebay that is programed for a different truck but still a 6.0L will it work on my truck? Will the custom tunes work that are on it or will it have to be reprogramed for my truck? Also what is better the SF3 with preloaded tunes or the X3 with only custom tunes? Is it worth buying a used SCT off of ebay? Thank you.

I bought my SCT off craigslist used, it had custom tunes on it but they were VIN locked so they came up on the screen but wouldn't program to my truck. You'll have to find your own custom tunes for it, which will be better for your truck than someone else's custom tunes anyhow.

I personally just downloaded a few tunes from the spartan tunes page that is on a discussion on this site (use search to find it) and my truck runs great and RUNS great with the hybridrace tune.

got my x3 for $100, and put free custom tunes on it and i'm happy as I can be with it.

Will

The SCT will work on your truck as long as it's not locked. The custom tunes will work as long as your strategy is the same what was written for the sellers tunes. The SF3 has canned tunes which are fine, but if you have specific needs such as towing or higher HP custom tuning is the way to go.

i just recently sold my truck and am now selling my SCT X3. I put my truck back to stock before I sold it, and the chip has only been used on one truck... my old one. Does this mean that the SCT is unlocked and ready to be sold? Or is there something I need to do before I sell it?

More info for the OP, a couple of years ago the original X-3's are able to hold canned tunes and custom tunes just like the current SF3. So depending how long ago the guy bought the X-3 it will use a diffrent firmware.
