here is what I have and here is what I want to do

I am at an impass. Here is what I have already:

05 Excursion

SCT Tuner with Eric tunes
turbo back exhaust w/ cat delete

I am about to take a HUGE trip across country with a 10k trailer behind her. It will be a winter time trip, but it will be throught the Rockies, Sierra Nevadas and Cascade Mountains. LOTS OF pulling uphill.

besides budgeting for the trip, I figure I will have about another 500 bucks to put into the truck.

EGR delete?
extra tranny cooler?
After market air intake?

these are a couple i am batting around...........wish I could do them all.

BTW, budgeting includes fresh oil change and tranny flush.

Thanks

Get ya some kind of guages to keep an eye on everything. I would go with an Edge insight... I love mine.

I was thinking at least an EGT gauge, all that pulling hills and stuff it would be a good idea to keep one eye glued to the smoke temps.

I've got the Insight CS and it can monitor a lot more than pillar guages can. Plus, I got mine for like $350-$400 shipped. Good pillar guages are more than that aren't they??

I like to have the ECT, EOT and EGT up on the screen at one time, to keep an eye on the oil cooler and the rest, all at the same time.

I love my insight.

Getting muffler and cat delete pipes is cheap and very effective for lowering egts. If you want to get a 4" turbo back this is the cheapest few that I can find.
Turbo Back Single

You can either buy a kit to delete your egr or you can weld a plate to block the exhaust flow to the cooler.

Tuning I would go with Innovative diesel.

Aftermarket intakes are good upgrades but the stock air filter does a very good job for slightly modified trucks.
Number 1 thing to do is to keep up on the maintenance of your truck.

An EGR delete may be a good idea. How many miles are on it?

I would atleast scan your X to see what your EOT and ECT are. A blown EGR or Oil cooler can really throw out the anchor on your trip.

You're running tunes, towing a 10k trailer over the Rockies and Sierras and you can't justify an Edge just for monitoring your engine. Talk about penny wise and pound foolish! You need to be monitoring EGT's, Trans Temp, ECT and EOT on a trip like this. The Insight is the best bang for the buck you can add for monitoring. For all you know your oil cooler is already FUBAR. You better put about $4k in your stash fund to pay for the repairs when you pop a head gasket.

At the very least flush the cooling system and get the silicates out of there. Switch to an ELC coolant and give yourself a chance.

i say you stay home if you dont have money to throw out for repairs. Buy and insight and once you get a few miles into your trip youre going to want to turn around anyways from what readings you'll more than likley be seeing
