High pressure oil pump

I am new to the diesel truck scene, with a 05 Harley Edition. I am loving it! I am trying to learn all I can about the diesels. What is the job of the high pressure oil pump? Seems like it goes out a lot after 100,000 miles.

The HPOP supplies oil to the injectors to "fire" them. The HPOP's on the 05,6,7 are basically bulletproof. It's the STC (snap to connect) fitting that fails. It has been upgraded twice since production started on the 05's and the newest revision seems to be working well
