So, since I'm gonna be doing studs and gaskets...

Whether I need gaskets or not, I'm gonna be doing studs and a set of black onyx gaskets, can't delete the EGR (stinking california) I'm gonna go with a bulletproof EGR cooler and rebuild the oil cooler and replace the screen on the HPOP. The turbo drain tube was already done from ford back in '08. Also going to add a coolant filter and flush the system. So what else needs to be done or should be done while the truck is apart? Anything more I should do since I plan on fuel and turbo upgrades in the future?

Head Studs / Head Gaskets
Upgrade EGR Cooler
Rebuild Oil Cooler
Replace HPOP Screen
Flush system
Coolant Filter
Drain Tube is done

I think I need to add something to make it smoke. Like huge clouds of smoke, even when the truck isn't running.

I wouldnt. But thats me, and a discussion with a few bigger folks why we dont do those.

Fantom

Check the Heads, deck them, Id also flush them as well while your at it. Check your LPOP Gear Set. Just make sure it looks good.
Intake manifold have that flushed as well or cleaned out.
Id go ahead and do the regulated return but thats me since your gonna have it apart.
Check your water pump make sure it looks good.

All I can think of right now.

Sure as hell ain't gonna be me

Not sure yet, I'm gonna talk to the owner of Elm Ford and see what kind of deal he'll make me. We just did some asphalt work for them a couple months ago. If not, a local diesel shop.

I see you're in Sutter, you know of anybody?
