03 turbo vs 04.5-07
Can someone please clearify the actual difference between the the 03 turbos and the newer ones that makes the 03s so much louder? Ive been told its just the turbine and compression wheels, Ive also been told the turbo housing itself is different in which the 03s have a different number of vanes. All Im really trying to do is make my 06 sound like the 03s. Can I just change the wheels? or do I need to swap the entire turbo? Thanks

The 03's have 10 vanes and the 04+ have more. I just swapped mine for an 03 and it is my favorite thing i have done so far it screams.

03 model as you know have more audible noise cause by the vanes count (10 on the 03') later model unit added more vanes which inturn decreased the audible noise heard during turbo spool up.

The turbine wheel (exhaust side) on the 2003.25-2004.25 has 10 blades, while the 2004.25+ has a 13-blade turbine wheel. The extra blades on the more recent one result in reduced turbo lag, higher turbo efficiency, and thus less noise.
The the early engines, I believe, are capable of producing slightly more power when tuned, due to decreased exhaust backpressure... which is why the 2003s respond a little bit better to tuning, have slightly more lag, and are significantly louder. |

Actually the 03 has 10 vanes, the 04 has 12 vanes and the 05-07 has 15 vanes. I swapped an 03 onto my 05 wit a 4" straight piped exhaust and it screams. I love it. Never fails to draw comments.
