I've got the truck at the shop get some work done and have a decision to make. I need some advice from those that know...
I'm not huge on big massive loud trucks. I like a nice sound but I also want to be able to talk to my wife and kids when we are traveling. I also like to add a little pep to my step when I can. So I'm looking into doing a new exhaust and possibly adding a wicked wheel. I LOVE the turbo sound more than the big loud pipes.
Any suggestions out there on how to get the best of both worlds...
Performance addition
Not too loud
Good turbo sound
I have a diamond eye 4" turbo back on my 2003. Good growl when you stomp on it, the 03 turbo whistles like crazy, think jet engine, but at highway speeds talk to the wife like normal, I like it so far and it seems to line up with what you are looking for.
I'm running an AFE on my truck, even without the muffler I can carry a conversation just fine heading down the road. Different story standing next to the tailgate on a cold day
I have a 4" Magnaflow stainless downpipe to a 4" in 5" out 28" FTE resonator then 5" pipe to the 6" stack and absolutely no resonance in the cab. The truck with the windows up is dead quiet on the fwy and around town there is a bit of a growl from the exhaust but nothing objectionable.
Now with the windows down it isn't obnoxious but it has a definite deep sound to it. BUT mine is an early 04 with the 10 vane turbo so it sounds like a 747 from just off idle to about 1800 rpm. With the windows up the jet sound is not that noticeable but with the windows down it is a jet. You either love it or hate it.
The FTE resonator does the job of ensuring there is NO resonance. Just make sure and mount it and the pipe well with plenty of insulators.
I also have Diamond Eye 4" turbo back with no muffler on my 2006 and talk to my wife with no issues. The turbo whistle is sweet and sounds good when you stand on it. My previous 06 had stock exhaust with the cat and muffler replaced with straight pipe and it sounded good too.
I have 4" MBRP Straight piped with upgraded turbo Sounds like an f15 if its to loud your to old HAHA. I do have the muffler sitting on the bench tho if your in to quite...
"I'm out old man. I'm just a pecker-wood who lives in the woods with too many guns. Ya happy?"
Magna Flow 4" turbo back with cleaned out cat and muffler. Can talk with wife no problems, only has loud noise when skinny pedal is mashed or towing up a hill with concrete barrier on passenger side of road.
I'm very happy with a 4" Dynomax CAT back system. I also have a CAT delete pipe which didn't increase noise much, just hear the turbo more through exhaust exit.
