Just put mbrp 4" turbo back with cat delete and one of their high flow mufflers. Couldn't wait to hear rumble but she doesn't!! Only a forced air/whistle sound. Saw a thread on here saying its normal when cold but should go away at operating temp. Mine does not. Any idea what could cause this?
Welcome the the org! The muffler is why your truck is quiet, take that off and you'll be getting lots rumble and whistle. Oh, and whistle is normal since you have a turbo....
She's a rumbling, but the turbo is likely drowning it out. The VGT turbos on these trucks are loud, and like Justin said above, the muffler usually quiets the rumble more than the turbo.
What year truck (or preferably turbo) do you have? An '03 will whistle considerably more because of the 10 blade turbine. If you want it to rumble at idle without the turbo noise (and you have a tuner), you can have your tuner write an "open vane at idle" tune and you'll get the sound you're looking for.
Here's a video of mine when I was running one of those tunes.....no muffler through
truck is an 06 f-350 6.0L. It's not turbo that I'm hearing. Every once in a while it will like cycle or something and it will sound like what I had hoped for a couple seconds. Then goes back to air sound. The muffler isn't much of a muffler it's basically straight thru pipe with some burrs on the side. Just not sure what it is that cycles and why it won't stay where it should be.
That cycle you're hearing is the VGT vanes cycling the turbo, which changes the speed of the turbine and the sound that comes out of your exhaust. It won't stay there because it's not supposed to, unless it's tuned as such.
A video would help so we could hear it if you don't believe us...
It actually commands the VGT to about 15-25% (85%is full closed) and no it doesn't affect how the truck runs, just gives it that V8 rumble at idle. As soon as you touch the throttle to get off idle the vanes close and everything is business as usual from there.
I run 2 Dynomax Bullet glass packs on mine. One close to the downpipe the other where the muffler used to be. They are cheap, like $55 a piece for a 4" exhaust on Amazon. They sound good IMHO. At idle, the whistle is not audible. Cruising through town sounds decent. Cuts it down a little on the highway cruising too.
i'm stumped on this... This isn't the first time i've seen where someone said that the vgt positioning can be changed. I've talked with a handful of top name tuners and every one of them said that they cannot control the vgt position at idle. If i recall, i've even talked with Nate, same response
I have tunes from Matt at Gearhead from a year ago with open vane at idle, Chris from TSD initially tweaked that for me when I was running his tunes three years ago, and Nate from WPE tweaked it for me when I ordered his.
Mine doesn't sound as beefy as the ones in the video even while they are in their cycle. I hear a similar from mine on occasion when it's doing the cycle I believe you guys are referring to but mine literally sounds like I picture it should for maybe 3-4 seconds on 3 separate occasions. Even while driving when I mash on it it doesn't like a strong machine. The sound I'm hearing on mine wasn't the sound I believe you were trying to show me with the videos. When I put that hammer down you hear the engine get louder but only a stronger air/wind sound from the exhaust.
Last night I saw A buddy of mine I had told about me doing the exhaust prior to getting it done and he jokingly asked me why I didn't get it done over the weekend I said I was doing it because it does not sound anything like any other truck neither of us have ever heard with exhaust. I told him yeah I did the exhaust is on there and the look on his face was priceless. He was puzzled just like I am as to why it never sounds like a beefy truck should.
To be fair......a lot of us are straight piped with no muffler, and all of those videos are with a straight pipe too. Maybe take it off and see if it's the sound you're looking for?
Well I bet you tuning makes a big difference when you get a call from Rykan telling you the injectors you were supposed to have in the truck are just stock, the only thing that doesn't make sense to me is how (and no I'm not a fan of this) but how smokey this truck has always been, way more than my last stock truck by a long shot so I don't know...
I don't know either just needed to vent I guess sorry haha
I gave the wrong information to Nate I guess because holders informed me my injectors were actually stock so yea dont mind me
I guess my signature is becoming more and more true haha I just thought it was weird because when the truck had canned tunes it was extremely smokey which I didn't think could happen with stock injectors but oh well haha
