Where will you put the mother-in-law?
My X has been called a "Family Truckster" more than once.
I pulled the cross-bars off, so as to better clean the top and found they had actually damaged the paint from chafing. I keep them in the garage now.

No, mom put up quite a fight

Unlatch the crossbars at the side locks and slide them to the end of the rails. The end caps of the rails have a tab you push down as you slide the cross bar back. The cross bar will then lift off the rail. If you break out a ladder and have a look you'll see what you need to do. They can be a little stubborn, and an extra set of hands can help. I had to hold down the tab on the end cap with a small screw driver as I slid the cross bar back.

yeah stump,

if you don't use the roof rack, get it off..it will or already has worn the paint and can lead to rust.. throw them in the garage to take up another corner and you'll have them if you need them..
