my new to me X handles like a backwards Shopping Kart

I just purchased a 140k mile 03 excursion Eddie Baur with 6.0 L PS 4wd.

The front end drifts all over the place . not alignment drift, but does not actually return back to center. kind of have to keep correcting while going straight. i can brake and it is perfect. kind of like pushing a shopping kart backwards. just cant get it to not wander.

I want a 4-5 inch lift kit / suspension and was hoping it would fix the wander but i need to be sure.

This X will never see dirt. looking for looks only and a great ride or best that can be expected from a lifted excursion. No kits I have looked at say "we offer a great ride" anyone from persoanl experience say that with their lift?

The most important two things for me are RIDE COMFORT and LOOKS in that order. WAIT>>> a new # 1. Fix the current shopping kart syndrome in handling., then ride comfort then looks

I have read and read and seen a million different solutions... most are back from 05-06-07 years... i just want someone to say"this is what you need to do"


any help would be greatly appreciated

Have you had the alignment checked? Still could be that. Get it checked first and go from there.

Sounds like your ball joints are gone. ITs common to happen. Lift the front off the ground and pry under the wheel with a bar and see if there is any slack. IF so you need new ball joints and an alignment.

Damn, dealership quoted me 1200 dollars to replace upper and lower ball joints

our excursion did that and it ended up being some seized and some worn ball joints.
i cant say it was only that because we did the steering box at the same time.

Test drove an 03 Ex this weekend - owner said upper and lower joints were out on passenger side and WOW - that sucker wobbled like a shopping cart @ 65, but it was barely perceptible at lower speeds.

Why not take the $$ and a couple weekends, get some tools, brew, and replace them yourself?

dont take this the wrong way, but if it was doing that before, why did you buy it. perhaps you could have talked him down the 1200 for repairs.

No worries. i figured it was worth it. the rest of the x looked great. so did the car fax. he started at 13900 got it for 12500
