48 gallons in a ex fuel tank?

I harpooned my tank after dropping it and completely emptying it out. I put 3 gallons back in it and then ran to the gas station 5 blocks away. I then put another 45 gallons in it.

That's 48 gallons.
Does that sound right?
I didn't think you gained capacity, just filling speed.
