04 Excursion - head gasket leak

Dad, has '04 Excursion with about 150,000KMs (just under 100,000 Miles) and Ford tells him that he has leaking head gasket(s). The truck is off warranty . Any suggestions how to fix this? I was told that it's a very expensive job (thousands) and you have to take the body off the frame to get at the heads... I'm all ears.

Happy New Year!

What kind of issues is the Excursion having for them to suspect a head gasket?

What are the symptoms that led them to say it needs head gaskets?

Removal of the body is the best way to do it, but that's not how the shop manual says to do it, for what it's worth.

It must be out on time, not mileage, which really bites. Did you guys buy it new and service it at the dealer for the most part? Is this YOUR dealer you're getting the head gasket diagnosis from?

All I know is that it's loosing antifreeze. I'm not sure if they did a pressure test of some sort and I don't know how fast the antifreeze is 'leaking'. We don't have "OUR" dealer. Dad had it checked at Ford and by another independent diesel mechanic shop. They both stated that it needs head gasket replacement.

Yes, the warranty ran out on time, not mileage . Dad purchased it last year. It was an ex-gov't vehicle but we have no maintenance history on it.

Do you guys know how much this would cost at Ford? How many hours does it call for? Where could I get a service manual?

I just had it done. Labor $2200, head gaskets and ARP head studs $650, EGR Delete $400, SCT tuner $500 = $3750

Was this the price from a Ford dealer? I was quoted 5K in labor for head gasket alone by non-ford shop... Hmmm. I need to get other quotes.

I'm new to all of this. What's EGR delete and SCT tuner?

Guys keep in mind he is in Cananda too so the cost is going to be more up there. Unless you bring it down to the states I don't know how much cheaper you will get up there.

Correct. That's why I asked how many hours Ford service manual calls for the head gasket replacement? Using local hourly rate I could estimate the approx price.

In the Ford service manual, how many hours does it call for the head gaskets replacement?

Where could I get a Ford service manual (book or DVD)?
