Are 285/70 17 on stock rims ok?

My stock tires are about used up on the stock F250 Alloy rims that came on the 2005's (the wierd rims that look like they're trying to be big rig weels)

Anyway I've always thought the stock 265/70 tires looked puny in those big wheel wells but I don't have the dough for new wheels and I don't want to lift the truck due to lowering my mileage.

By the way I have the Ford brand splash guards and they do eat up some tire space in the front wheel wells. My current tires come real close to rubbing the inside of the splash guards. But I want to keep the guards they really help keep the step rail clean, plus there will be holes from where the splash guards were attached.

Sooo has anyone run the 285/70 17 on stock rims without rubbing the inside of the wells or the splash guard?

I don't think you will have problem, not until you get into something like 35's or larger.

285/70R17 fit no problem. 305/70R17 fit as well.

I'm not saying a 35" but 305/70R17 converted is a 34"X12.4" tire. It will fit because I've seen it before on a stock F250.

OK, i just did not want to mislead the OP. I agree with your saying that the tire will fit also. (BTW it is actually 33.8 tall and 12 wide)
I think I've seen some 35's without level/lift that worked, but it might be pushing it for the OP's application.

Well in fact a 305/70-17 can vary in actual size depending on the tire, so some may be closer to a 33 inch, and some might be closer to a 35 inch. Id say play it safe, and go with a 285 that is a little bit wider than some of the other 285s.

I went from a 265/70/17 on stock wheels to a 275/70/18 stock take-off wheels. The 17" tire was 31.6", the 18" is right about 33". I have ford OEM mud flaps on my truck too and with the bigger wheels they do rub on the mud flap at about 3/4 lock.

Hmm, its tough to say, because the heights of these trucks are known to be different sometimes....for example, some people have rubbing when they put 35" tires on a leveled truck...I can clear 35s without a leveling kit, without rubbing.

an F350 sits just a tad higher than a 250 does stock too, if that helps.
