Heated mirrors

First winter since I bought my 2003. Didn't get an owners manual. Think I have heated telescoping sideview mirrors. Must they be turned on somehow to heat or is it automatic when temps drop below certain temperature?

He means that there is a defrost symbol on the top corner of the mirror glass. I'm pretty sure the GEM module controls the mirror heat
