New deck or screen

So I cant stand it any longer! I've owned my truck for 3 yrs now and not having an AUX port to play my phone has gone on to long. So I have decided to either put in a deck or complete full screen in my truck. And I have just a few questions.

First is how hard is it to install a deck by your self? I know pulling the old one out can be pretty easy but it is difficult to reinstall if I know little about wiring?

And also can I go to a ford dealership and order a screen from them (with the AUX option obviously) and have them install it? Or since my truck is older they wont make it to fit my yr model?

P.S. I have used different FM transmitters and they all suck so those are not an option

Well I'm looking at pretty much nothing but Pioneer. I've had success with them in the past on other vehicles and I hear their always good. I don't have a specific deck picked out though. Now I'm starting to think about maybe just shelling out for a full touch screen (Pioneer) but its gonna break the bank.

But since I've been looking at them I found they are complicated as HELL! Most look exactly the same but can have a 200 or more dollar price difference and its all about what capabilities it has and if it syncs with your truck. So I'm nervous to buy a badass 500$ unit and it not work haha.

What are you looking at?

I have a nice fold down deck out of my old truck but thinking of buying a new one. I love Pioneer! Thats all I have ever run. I have wired quite a few trucks and cars and it so simple!

well thats good to know!! So lets talk screens for a second. If I do a full touch screen this is what it will need to be...

1. Look good and be compatable with my truck and yr model
2. Fit in my truck correctly
3. Be USB and AUX capable
4. Be Pioneer brand
5. Be around the 4-500$ range

Is this available or am I'm asking to much?

yea pretty much like that! I don't care about the sat radio cuz I wont pay for it and I don't really care about Bluetooth either. I want the most simple in dash you can get with the AUX and USB still available. And I don't need the navigation either.

the 05 up dash opening is perfect fin for double DIN units. the 04 down need a little cutting.

The stock radio removal is fairly straight forward. check youtube for removal instructions.

Get a pigtail for wiring to the original factory plug, there is no reason to cut any wires, and also a Ford mounting kit from Metra or Axxess. The total for both items should be less than 20 bucks and they are all over ebay. In fact many retailers will include one if not both with a new head unit.

A few thoughts on head unit selection. Look for those that have rear USB and/or iPod plugs. I had one that only had the front USB and it was a total PITA with wires always sticking out the front of the unit. Try to find a unit with A2D2 Bluetooth 2.0 or higher control. My phone never gets plugged into my unit, but I can not only listen to music from it but control Pandora directly from the unit. If you want more integration and to use your phone nav function on the head unit look for those with built in app control. For Android you need one with an HDMI (not USB) input and for iPhone you need a dedicated iPod connector.

Lastly when looking at these, make sure you find out how much the connection cables and kits cost up front. Some are very pricey, especially for iPhone.

I went with a JVC full thouch screen and i like it. I know JVC isnt a Pioneer but it didnt break the bank too bad and it was exactly what i wanted.

Wiring is pretty much straight forward. Mounting bracket and wiring harness from bestbuy is around $50, so don't forget to factor that in. And remember, test it before you put your dash all back together!

It helps to hit the parking break, turn the key on, and shift down to first and then pull the dash, so your shifter is out of the way.

I meant to take pictures when I did my last install, but didn't get around to it.

Good luck!
