Yep, the full climate control version uses vacuum actuators to control the ducts, whereas the manual one uses your thumb and finger to power the various flaps.

I suppose you could do it, but it's going to be a lot of work.

Downside of the auto control system: when you develop a vacuum leak in your 4wd hub actuators, switching on 4wd kicks the system to defrost, and your face gets roasted while your feet freeze. That's getting downright annoying.
