Stock Radio - upgrade?

Ok I don't want to replace the stock stereo because I don't want to spend a crud load and I'm too old to want a system to compete with the ricers.....besides they're never beside me long enough to hear their thumping because my rig is giving them a smoke filled thumping when the light turns green. So is there anything I can do to the stock system to make it sound a bit better? Small amp and better speakers maybe?

alan, i did not change the 4 corners at all. i put in a sony head unit and it sounds very good. i built a harness to the rear for an amp that only runs 1 ten inch sub off of rca cables. pm me for phone # and i will tell you how to do it for next to nothing. the factory corners are not that bad.

your thump thump radio is your engine.
so don't worry about your radio as long as it sound good inside your rig. for a matter of a couple hundred bucks you can have an Alpine or Kenwood deck. another couple hundred on speekers and your fine as far as i am concerned.

Thanks guys - so basically the factory head unit is a pos and can't do anything for me? If I were to replace the factory unit I'd want the tv and all but living in Houston I'd always worry about some azzhat breaking into it and stealing it....even WITH my alarm.

my stock radio went out about three years ago, that's when i upgraded my radio to an Alpine deck. costed my about $400 for the one i ended up buying. i have heard that there is a market out there for stock radios. i would keep it and sell it to someone.

Hey Alan, replace stock unit with a premium upgrade aftermarket unit. Pionneer, Sony, JVC, Kenwood, Alpine, what ever brand you like. You can get a good head unit for around 150 bucks, that is am/fm/cd/mp3 and I think you can even get one to play them old van halen or ac/dc 8 tracks you got laying around somewhere.

driver side front, driver side rear, passenger side front, passenger side rear. Those speaker positions equals the four corners.

Hey man be gentle - I turn 38 this month.....but I did have a '68 Ford Falcon that had an 8 track tape player in it when I first joined the Army.

Ok so the consensus thus far is upgrade the head unit which I was trying to avoid. I guess let me shop around and see if I can find one that I like, that might keep some little darling from smashing out my beer window to get to it.
What about the speakers? I like to hear some good 'ol Hank Sr. nice and crisp and clear on my 8 tracks so it's a clear sound I'm looking for.
Also would a small amp be handy to have too?

Wow I didn't know you were only 8 years older then me.

I suggest replacing the head unit, the oem speakers with oem replacement 3-way or 4-way speakers with a 100watt or 200 watt amp to tie it all together. Over all cost if you get free install or DIY should be no more then 400 bucks. Then you can listen to Hank Sr or JR crisp and clear. Plus Curelysue can listen to the modern cds in this set up too.
