So the overhead display is not working correctly. The display has power and comes on, but the compass is always reading "CAL" underneath the compass and never reads a direction. Also the DTE function doesn't read correctly either, but I'm thinking that's just a function of the fuel gauge not reading correctly. Any thoughts? Maybe just replace it with a known functioning unit?
I'll jump in here if I may. I don't have a suggestion for you as I don't know much about these, but mine is completely out. Are they protected by a fuse? If so, do you know which one?
There is a company (sponsors on here iirc) that will repair these for a reasonable cost. Much cheaper than replacing. Going blank is a common problem that mine suffered as well. Maybe someone can weigh in with the company name.
There's a sticky thread in the tech section that tells you how to fix it yourself. Typically the soldered connections on the resistors break. It's not too hard to repair yourself. I just did mine today.
i believe the CAL you are seeing means the compass doesn't have its baring. In our 97 expedition we drove around in cicrcles in a culdesack and it got a baring
