Transmission ID Problem

I have a 2003 F250 FX4 with a 6.0 in it. I have read that all 6.0's came with a 5R110W tranny. Also read that the 5R has an external filter. Here's the rub, no external filter on my trans. I do have the tow/haul switch, which also points to the 5R?

I need to replace the filter and fluid...gotta figure out which one it is. CONFUSED!

Also, what full synthetic trans fluid would you recommend? Can that same fluid be used in the transfer case?

Thanks for helping a rookie out!

The external filter housing is on the right front inside of the frame up in between the radiator and front axle. It's a small canister about the size of a coke can with a 22mm hex nut to twist it off. If you can't find it follow the trans cooler lines to the front of the vehicle.
