Why the Mercon V, Very Special fluid?

Hello all you Great Experts!!!

I take it my 06 TorqueShift takes the VERY special Mercon V fluid.... Anybody know what is so special about it???? I have to find a source or go full synthetic, ford only carries it here for the Explorer so I hear, and it is VERY expensive, something in $16-17 a litre? A$ so X .76, but it is still at least double U.S. prices...

Maybe Castrol Transmax Z? It is also expensive but a very high "Surface Tension" adhesion factor and also much higher boiling point than a straight mineral... I will have to check with Castrol... But any one know why the special fluid... Marc, I think you said VERY special..... Know why?

Thanks in Advance, Ranger...

Mercon V

Mercon V is a synthetic. That's probably why it costs so much.

Marc is right again !!!

Mercon SP, I don't know where I got the Mercon V, but Friends that is
DEFINITELY WRONG, don't put it in your transmissions as the manual says it is incompatible (as in don't mix them).....

So, Mercon SP synthetic. Now I understand from Ford Australia, that is what is put in the Explorer? Is that right? If so they are calling for Castrol Transmax Z as the fluid here. Marc, can you cross referrence that?

Thank you, Ranger in Oz....

Hello Diesel Nut,
That would be really great news, but when I went to the Amsoil Corporate site it does not reflect that Synthetic ATF is good for Mercon SP....

Application guide for my truck 2006 CC F-350 KR 4x4, shows not product application for the 5R110 Transmission... AMSOIL Corporate - Source of the World's Best Synthetic Lubricants - Motor Oil and Filters and Application Chart... 2006, F-350 and under the Automatic Transmission part it shows no Amsoil product...????? One of them is out of Kilter???

Would be nice if true, I can get Amsoil here in Australia...

Regards from Oz.... Ranger

The application guide is incorrect. I spoke with Tech Support yesterday to verify the information. The information release was taken from the internal magazine, Direct Line, which is for Direct Jobbers. The official press release will be public in the February issue of the Amsoil Action News, which is a magazine sent to all Amsoil Dealers and Preferred customers.

If you look up the ATF here under specs you will see Mercron, Mercron V & SP

Thank You Diesel Nut,
A recent upgrade to cover the Mercon SP as well!!!
Looks good, and since Mercon SP is not available readily in Oz, looks like I am another Amsoil convert here as we have Searched up an Amsoil Distributor...

Cheers, from Down Under....
