5r110 repair

Well today I finished the replacement of a bad transmission fluid/oil temperature sensor. It started a few days ago while on my way home the "tow/haul" light started flashing, it was running and shifting okay so I continued on. With only about five miles to go the "check engine" light came on and after a couple of stop signs the transmission would no longer go into fifth gear. I have an edge "PID" monitor and it showed the trans fluid at "-67 degrees". What I find really aggravating is that with only 67,000 miles a $16 part can essentially make the truck unusable. Also it seems at the very least would supply the part free since they obviously determined there was a problem with the original because they changed the part number.

What codes was it sending? Or did you find out it was just bad out of the box?
