out of oil

My wife was driving my truck home one night from her dad's place a couple weeks ago. She called me in a panic. She said that the temp sensor was getting hot. I told her to slow down and find a good place to stop and let the tranny cool down. She slowed down and didn't quite get to a good place to stop.

I went to get her and the kids. Turned out that the temp light came on because of a tranny line leak. It was one of the high pressure ones that go into the filter behind the bumper. The crimp part fell apart when I started looking for the source, but the line actually cracked behind where the fitting connects to the line.

After I had it towed home (thank God for AAA plus) and fixed the leak. I put 12 quarts in and fired it up. The truck moved and shifted through all its gears. Then on the way home it slammed into 2nd and the tow/haul lite started flashing.

The question is, since it actally ran and drove and shifted all into all its gears and was able to go highway speed, is this tranny actally junk? I haven't had it to a tranny shop yet, but I'm hoping that a flush and new filters I could have this truck back on the road for under $500. The new oil is dirty and the old stuff that cycled through is burnt (brown in color).

So I guess no one even has an opinion on the matter.

Without knowing any trans codes it's pretty tuff to tell you if it committed suicide and if it did, under $500, that's funny. Brown ATF is one indicator that something major is wrong. I'm guessing your trans burnt itself up, 12 quarts low, WOW!!!
