I think my tranny is too hot.

So I am new at this. I have a 05F350 stock with a bd diesel x-tuner. Today I installed guages and I think I might have a problem. My tranny looks like its heatin up to almost 260 in stop and go traffic. I do have the tuner turned all the way up but is there any way I might have messed up the trans temp guage install and maby my guage is giving me a funny read out cause its hooked up wrong? It seems to function fine. Warms up as the truck does. Also, the stock guage isn't indicating anythings wrong.
The truck hasn't ever had a issue with 65,000 kms and I do tow with it.
The gauges I installed are autometer x series. Thanks for your help.

well im pretty sure if your tranny was running at 260 for a period of time it would deffinatly be noticable. it would be shifting at weird times possible slipping as well as not shifting very firm. also check your tranny fluid cuz if your tranny is really that hot i garantee you would burn your fluid so if it has any kind of brown to it it is burnt. and smell it. if it smells sour then i beleive that means its burnt.

Welcome to the forum! It sounds like your gauge has issues. The stock gauge should peg and set off a light before you get to 260. One thing you could try is shooting the tranny with an infrared thermometer when the temps get that high. I know not everyone has one of those but they should. You can pick one up for about $50.

I agree with the above posts. I wouldn't worry about the tranny, I'd sort out the problem with the gauge. If your tranny was really 260 degrees it would be shifting like crap and slipping, that's way too hot!

I put the sensor into the pressure test port where I believe most people put it. Now I did not add a extra ground to the guage. The install kit said that the guage should be grounded from the sensor in the tranny. If thats not the case I guess it could either be the sensor or the gauge. Which would be more likely to fail? Thanks

BTW it must be a error with the sensor or the guage because the fluid looks great.

Problem solved. It was a faulty ground.

Faulty ground??? Could you explain? Most temp sending units form their own ground when they are screwed into the block or this place , the trans case.
