05 6.0 Excursion tow/haul downshift/converter

Thanks everybody for taking time to look at this. My x when decelerating in the tow mode downshifts fine thru all the gears except 2nd to fst. I'm thinking it could be the converter. It's so violent you would think someone rear ended the truck. If I am just stopping normally with the tow haul on it stops fine. But say the light changes to red or someone cuts me off and I have stop quickly the truck will just HAMMER like I lost a driveshaft. I have changed all the fluids"MotorCraft only" and filters. I did by the truck used but I do not have any problems other than this. If it is the converter how do I check it?? I pull quite frequently with the truck and I would like to resolve this.
