Superchips tranny shudder?
Ever since I recently installed a Superchips MaxMicro tuner on my truck the tranny exhibits a slight shudder everytime I shift into reverse. It does it in any of the 3 settings. It shifts excellent in all the forward gears, but when I kick it into reverse it gives a little shudder and then the truck starts moving. What's the deal? My forte is engines, not trannies.

Is this a torque convertor issue? I changed it to the Economy setting and it still does this. When I kick it into reverse the shudder feels like something inside the tranny is spinning and having to abruptly change direction, or rather it feels like something is wobbling for a moment and then it smooths out and goes in reverse...it's weird. Otherwise the truck is running great on the Superchips, real nice smooth, firm shifts in the forward gears. Maybe this is just a quirk of the tuning that is harmless?

check the fluid level first. smell it, see if it smells burnt at all. is is still bright red ? only use MerconSP to add if it is low, get it from Ford. i have an upgraded tranny and a heavy duty lo stall converter, so mine shifts a tad hard and firm but i like it that way. as long as it's not from a bad converter, there is no reason to worry, might just be higher line pressure. also remember that whenever you reflash your computer (superchips flash) the tranny goes back into "relearn" mode for several hundred miles and may shift a tad jerky or abruptly during this time. |

The "shudder" when shifting into reverse I was talking about has quieted down after several hundred miles of driving. Only thing now is that there's about a 1 second delay between shifting into reverse from D and engagement...and when it engages into reverse it's REAL firm...if my foot's not on the brake w/ decent force the truck gives a slight lurch into reverse...otherwise everything's kosher and the truck run's like an animal in the forward gears. Havn't noticed any slippage and no new leaks on the tranny. Is my tranny safe? I've got 22,000 miles on the fluid right now. Been tuned for about 2,000 or so. Prolly should change the fluid soon, eh? It's still a nice red color, but maybe it's worn out? Could that be why the reverse engagement is so damn hard? ???

Well. The reverse engagement has softened up. The delay isn't so bad anymore. Apparently racing the living sh*t outta the truck and stopping and running the shifter back and forth through all the gears several times was some sort of remedy. I know the tranny goes into relearning mode every time you program the pcm...but I guess I just wasn't driving the truck in a way that was having it relearn properly. This time around I took it on some back roads and really let 'er rip...also put in Tow/Haul and also in "3" rather than "D" and did some curvy/hilly sections bumping the redline...haha...no worries...I know when to back off on the throttle, but I really let her have it...now the tranny seems to be behaving much better.
