5R110W Select 4th Gear
Anybody else frustrated they cannot hold their automatic transmission in 4th gear?
There are times more often than not if the truck would stay in 4th gear with the converter locked it would develop less heat and pull stronger. Instead it jumps around. This is one of those instances when the human ear is better than the computer. Since this transmission is electronically controlled, is there a way to set the transmission up in a "manual" mode and shift the gears with switches? Is there an aftermarket device to do this? It sounds reasonable. Has this not been done because it can't, or because I am the only person that needs this, no market? |

In tow haul, with a load, my truck will hold 4th all day long. Very rarely can I get it to shift into 5th (I don't go fast enough) and it never downshifts into 3rd at cruising speeds.

What is your rearend gearset?

And there's the clincher. While I have 373 gears, I also have 40" tires. My 4th gear is VERY tall compared to a stock truck. At 70mph my truck turns 1300rpm in 5th.
Having such large tires makes my 4th gear a lot more versatile than yours I would think. |

I get so frustrated with my truck too for not staying in 4th gear but just a couple seconds before jumping on to 5th and locking! It would pull so much harder if I could use 4th locked for longer.

So back to my original question...What can we do about it?

I don't see why you couldn't have a tune written to lock it in 4th whenever tow/haul was pressed.
It's funny-my truck stays in 4th all day long around town. It won't shift into 5th unless I'm doing 65 or better. We have the exact opposite problems. |

You guys aren't actually going from 4th to 5th... you're going from 3rd to 5th. Or 3rd to 4th to 6th, depending on temps.
4th and 5th have almost identical gear ratios. 4th is really only used when the trans is REALLY cold, as it can't make a reliable 3-5 shift, 3-4 is much easier. Some of you probably already know this, but some probably don't. Last edited by mdub707; 11-03-2011 at 09:04 AM. |
