Tow/Haul not working. Ideas???

So I just bought my truck about 3 weeks ago and the tow/haul button didnt always engage, and then yesterday it just stopped working all together. Checked the fuse, pulled the whole steering column apart checked the wiring and it seemed fine. I dont know what else to check. Maybe the button itself? Ford doesnt just sell that though, you have to bought the whole gear **** which cost a dazzling $75. Anyone else know what might be wrong, I dont know for sure if its the wiring/ button or not...

switch

So I disassembled the column down to where I could get to the plug and low and behold the grey wire was in fact broke off. I re terminated it and it still dosnt work?? Bad switch?? Can I just un plug it and while its running quick cross the terminal to see if it activates the tow haul mode? Or is there some kind of resistor in the switch?? Any ideas??

And does the the switch screw off of the handle? Or is it a snap on cap? Or is it just pressed together?
