Trans Temp Gauge Pegged to Red

What does Trans Temp in red, Check Gauge illuminated and Tow/Haul On Blinking indicate?

Driving under normal conditions for about 6 miles when I noticed the Check Gauge indicator was lit up. The Trans Temp Gauge was pegged to Red and the Tow/Haul On light was blinking. I would have noticed the gears working within a minute had I left Tow/Haul On so I assumed it was off.

I pulled over shut down, restarted, back to red. Pressed the Tow/Haul button to off, light still blinking. Drove around the block trying Tow/Haul on/off to see if anything would change. No luck but I still felt I was in Tow/Haul Off. I limped home and checked the Trans Fluid it was OK. This morning I started up my truck and the temp did not go off the chart. This tells me that sucker was Hot or the gauge could have a fluke but I doubt it. I checked the radiator for debris but it was all clear. I was not in 4WD.

Is my tranny about to have a meltdown ?

This blows. I just got it back last week after having the ball joints replaced.

Odometer is about 50,000

stock trans temp

My experience with the stock gauge is that it does not move until things are getting in the danger zone. Not long ago while 4 wheeling on Velano Beach my Speedhut trans temp gauge was moving close to 280* while the stock trans temp did not budge from it's normal position. Under normal driving conditions my trany temp never gets above 160* and I live in Florida so it's always hot as far as this Yankee is concerned. Something is definitely going on with your truck but I would invest in an aftermarket gauge that will give you true temps at all times.

if you have access to a code reader....see if there is any codes. a flashing OD light usually indicates a problem, but we have seen so few problems with the torqueshift that im wondering if you may have something else like a bad sensor (tranny temp) or something along those lines......Marc

something to add when I drove it again not only did it peg red but it started bouncing from normal to red a couple times. I had a hunch the sensor was faulty.

Im under warranty so I dropped it off earlier today. Already had a call back to say it was something faulty in the electronics. thanks for the quick replies. Ill post exactly what it was when the work is complete.

So whatever was the problem with the truck then??? I am having the exact same issue with my 03 f250 6.0, with 74k on it. Also what a concedence?? Started after having an oil change done, two injectors and Balljoints!!! Funny also; the trannys not covered under warrenty any more.....or so ive been told; but I could swear it was 100k Powertrain warranty?? wouldnt it include the tramsmission??wtf.

sorry for the delay. here is what happened as described on the service invoice.

CAUSE: 53529 DIAG TRANS OVERHEATS AND CEL ON WDS TEST P0713 MONITER PIDS FOR TEMP SESOR PEFORM PINPOINT TEST B1-B7 ELECTRONIC TRANS DIAGNOSIS R@R TRANS PAN REPLACE FLUID TEMP SENSOR SHORTED TEST DRIVE ALL OK CLEAR CODES AND RETEST

PERFORMED:
7000F- Auto Trans Electric Diag
7000F2- Auto Trans Pin Point Test
7191a11- Auto Trans Fluid Temp Sensor Replace (7h141)
7191a- Auto Trans Gasket Remove and Replace (7a191/7a194)
7191axq Auto Trans

It was covered under warranty. I forgot to ask if it was the 100k warranty but I am assuming so since they didnt bang me for $100 deductibel which is the case for things that fall under the extended warranty I purchased.

the only thing covered by the 5/100 warranty is the engine, and any componant bolted to the engine that affects the engines funcion (water pump, turbo, etc). there are a few other things like the intercooler and such covered but for the most part it has to be in or on the engine and have to do with the engines functionality. P/S pump for example is not covered...........Marc

Transmissiong gauge

Only once did my gauge go close to the red and it was on a steep mountain pulling my 5er about 20 miles an hour up and around about 1 mile. Once I hit the top and started moving lateral it went to normal very quick.
