Cool cannister filter

Ok I am bad. I finally found a manual for my 2005 f250 45k miles and after reading this forum for the last few months I decided to change my tranny filters and use amsoil. I pulled the pan ok and proceded to the cannister filter. I worked on it gently for a while but could only get it to move a turn. So I tried a little harder and then broke the bottom off of it. Any suggestions on how to get it off? Should I pull the whole unit and stick it on a bench? Or just take it in to someone? I live in Phoenix AZ but am going out of town far a week. Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the site, glad to have you with us. I can't help you with this, but someone should be along shortly that can answer your question. Good luck. And don't forget to check in to the introductions forum and meet the rest of the folks.

Gord.

im not sure who you can take it to in arizona but ill bump this up for ya... you might want to install an external filter so that when it is time to change your filter you dont have to drop the whole pan.....

Well I just got back from vacation so I just pulled out a 12" pipe wrench and managed to get the can off without removing the whole unit. The dealer has thewhole unit for $80. Looking inside the threads are messed up on two rows. Thanks to the factory!

The filter he's refering to is an external canister filter that looks like a roll of toilet paper when you take it out. The in pan filter is nothing but a screen of sorts and only removes chunks if you have a major failure. Ford has lately started adding an internal screen around the solenoids to help with the fine particles that get in the solenoids and cause shifting/failure issues but it's like $185.
