Temp sensor location question

My temp gauge goes dead and tow haul flashes. I read somewhere on here that's it's the sensor gone bad. If that's true is the sensor inside tranny or on the outside.

At least there's a drain plug in a 5R110 so you don't wear most of the oil.

Once the pan is removed, is the sensor in a pretty noticeable place? I assume once the pan is removed, it is a cake walk to replace. It's time for a trans service anyways on mine. I was thinking of doing it myself.
