Tranny or fan roar?

I pulled our 5th wheel home from the dealer today, first real tow. After a few miles I heard a slight roar from up front some where. It would change with gas pedal went away when I shifted into n. This happened every few minuets lastede no more than 15 to 20 secs at the most. Would happen on the gas and while coasting. This was done in tow haul, never heard the noise before.

I called the dealer and he said most likley was the fan comming on. He did say it was quite loud and will be heard when it turns on. He also said it was controlled by electronics and runs off the belt. This sound right?

consider it normal.....your fan clutch is electronic with a manual (like the standard clutch) override........since you were pulling the heavy trailer.....your truck was running hotter and needed the fan more, so it "locked" it up more than it would have to without it. some trucks it is more noticable......some it really isnt....but its a normal charactaristic..........but its kinda funny for old school guys to think that a fan clutch can set a check engine light...........Marc

Thanks for the reply! Kinda stinks that I will be hearing this loud noise every time I tow...wait until I have a Dodge driver with me. Can I put insulation under this hood? Would it even help?

if you put some sort of insilation around the fan shroud just so long as it cant get into the fan........it may help.....you would need to attatch it all the way around the shroud.....it isnt probably worth messing with though and could end up with other problems if that insilation ended up in the fan.......Marc

You could always put dual electric fans on it and get rid of the horsepower robbing one you have. Not to mention they are alot quieter.

i know this topic has been dead for 9months, but if the clutch is computer controlled how does a wire run to it? I don't see how that would work. Just curious.

Hi:

I have been pulling a fifthwheel for about 2 years (I have F30 2005). And this is the first time I experienced the same sound. I was quite worried since we are in the middle of nowhere, far away from home (In NM but live in Alaska). The dealer assured me it was okay and gave me similar answer: Not to worry but watch it!

So I am surmising that these could be the reasons:

1. Fan kicks in as stated in your post.
2. Sometimes tow/haul will kick in as we deccelarate at the top off the hill. My "noise" has been happening when I would take a foot off the gas pedal while in tow haul mode.

Would anybody would have any comments on this phenomena? Thank you Kid
