Engine miss slow turbo
so i have a few questions. i have a y pipe leak and will be replacing soon when the rest of the exhaust comes in but i am wondering if it can cause a miss or if i have another problem. i cleaned the air filter and it got better, replaced fuel filters and it seems to be worse. can the exhaust leak cause a miss. the turbo seems to be getting slower, so could that be an egr problem. i have to pull the turbo im told so should i block off the egr then or wait? is there anything i should do to the turbo while i have it out? i know that is a lot of questions, but any will answers will help.
thank you! |

leaking y pipe wont cause a miss, it will cause slow spool ups. clean the vanes of the turbo when its out. i would recommend blocking the egr while you are working on it

will,
thank you. do you think that my truck is sucking air after replacing the fuel filters? maybe too much lucas injector cleaner? also, do i need any kits to replace the turbo? will an egr cause a miss? |

Turbo install kit, gaskets and orings is about 15.00 from ford. You have to have it to prevent leaks..

very good, thank you!

Early 04 had inferred ebp, in which case. VGT is set on pcm strategy.
any exhaust leak before turbo will throw off startegy. Repair leak. Do a kam reset or disconnect batteries and reconnect after 15min put park brake on start vehicle. let vehicle run for 15min. The vgt will complete 6 learn cycle, and you will be good to go |

wow prommo,
thank you, i have no idea what those acranyms mean but i will do as you say!

the exhaust leak will cause very minimal loss of power , and if the engine is skipping thats is your power loss, even one cylinder partially skipping will cause bad power loss, before doing anything else , you need to get the problem diagnosed , a power balance test needs to be run , and will pinpoint which cylinder is skipping , or possible injector issue , blocking off the egr is great but if you have a bad egr valve , blocking does no good , boost pressures can still allow it to openn when it shouldnt , diagnose first , then proceed with repairs from there

wouldnt a bad egr set off a check engine light? so are you saying dont even worry about exhaust leak right now, that the miss is probably the biggest part of the problem? are diesels that much more sensitive to a miss than a gasser?
edit: doing a balance test will only tell me there is a problem which i already know, should i go straight to injector testing and cyl. pressure testing? or is it easier to find which cyl. is the problem cause its too much work to check it all? a bad egr valve can set a code in memory and never turn the light on at all, and yes a skip is a major loss of power if its even one cylinder its a drastic difference compared to a gasser , when dealing with diesels , take everything you know about a gas engine and throw it away its no good anymore
