I guess something did happen to it so I'll pull it out next week.
Now that you mention it, I vaguely remember reading about a thread where excessive crankshaft endplay was the cause of a no-start issue, since there was enough inward/outward movement of the crankshaft to cause the CKP sensor not to get a consistent reading, thereby causing the no-start. Have you had the transmission removed at all, at any point in time? Has your truck ever had any oil leak repairs? Do you have a digital camera that you can post pictures of your CKP tone ring? For what it's worth, pulling the engine oil pan is not that difficult on these engines, if needed, for better access and closer inspection of the tone ring on the crankshaft. Now you have me curious.

No the trans has never been taken out. No oil leaks were fixed that i'm aware of the only thing its ever had was a new EGR cooler, the STC fitting and a FICM reflash thats it. I'm gonna pull the engine out and give you some good pictures. I have to go out of town Wednesday so i wont take it out till next week when i do ill give you some pics. Also the gear is a little off center its more torwards the front of the engine and looking at it with a borescope do you know whether its supposed to hubbed up against the crank or off of it about an 1/8th of an inch cause thats how it is. When i pull it out we'll know sure enough

Hello all i finally got back from working out of town for about 4 months and i finally had time to take the engine out of my 05 F-350 and see if the dealer was right.... Well they were.... the Tone ring on the crankshaft which is pinned to the crank journal... Somehow the pin holding the gear from spinning worked its way out and came out so far that it finally grabbed something and snapped off... I will upload some pics soon. But this is a rare occurance and obviously it does happen... Just so u guys know... Beware of the Tone ring gear. I sent the crank to the machine shop and showed him how the gear is supposed to go. Gonna have it polished and they will make the gear not come loose again

subscribing. This is the second tone ring issue I've seen in about two weeks. Even though this is old thread.

ever get those pics?
How hard is it to get that oil pan off?
among other things, I may need to check that tone ring, my '05's giving me fits.
I'm also consitering doing rings "in-frame".

i highly doubt u can do it "in Frame" b/c u have to take the crank out of the engine. Unfortunatly i took the pics on my cell phone so i have to get a cable to download them from my phone to my pc so ill get them ASAP but what they show basically is the dowl pin which pins it into the journal from spinning sheared off b/c it backed out. Thanks for reminding me

My 05 is in the shop getting a new crank for the same issue. It is only a 10000 job. Ford said they usually only see this on reman motors.
