Serpentine Belt install

'05 Excursion 6.0 Powerstroke.

My serpentine belt self-destructed yesterday so I went and bought a new one this morning. I have been looking on these forums for step-by-step instructions. I have seen many say that you can put the new belt on without taking all that fan shrouding off first but I don't see how that is physically possible because the belt has to go around the fan!

So is that just people messing with newbies to be mean or what? Please don't mess me up like that, as I cannot really afford to have the dealer replace this belt if it is something that can be done fairly easily.

I am not a total mechanical idiot, but this is my first foray under the hood of a Ford, and a diesel.

Does anyone have a link to a step-by-step procedure? Thanks!

Welcome to the site! I Dont have any link for you to go to but put the belt over 1 blade then the next and just work your way on. I personally would just pull the fan shroud. Its not that biggie. And also on the belt tensioner pully,on the back their is a little kick stand type of thing that will give you the slack to put the belt on. Now on my truck I dont have one of those so I have to unbolt the alternator for the needed slack.

O.k.

So I think I can see how this goes. It looks like I don't really have to put the belt around the fan afterall. There is an extra pully in the diagram under the hood that is not there in the vehicle but o.k.

So I have another question. Is the pulley with the arrow supposed to spin freely? Because mine is locked tight.

Hmmm. Is there a special trick to posting an image. When I click edit, I see the url to the imgur image is there. Does this show up?

That would be the belt tensioner and yes it should spin freely. I'm gonna bet that's what killed your belt.

I got it all done. New tensioner pulley assembly is installed and belt is on. The hardest part turned out to be popping the little kickstand out at the end! Now to return that serpentine belt tensioning tool the book said I needed.

Thanks for your help.

Yea the belt dosnt have to go around the fan, the back side of the belt goes on top of the water pump pulley.
Youll be much happier if you get rid of that stupid fan stator.
Check out all the room I have.
