'04 6.0 w/ cooling fan acting funky

I have an '04 6.0 liter that I picked up a few months ago. When at highway speeds the fan will whine louder and softer, louder and softer, for 20 minutes at a time. Will stop when the speed drops to about 45.

Been to the shop twice and they tell me it's normal?!?!? Been driving the Ford diesels since early 90's and never had this problem. It's driving me NUTS...any ideas?

Thanks,

Jim

Can't be normal ... the only time my fan comes on is when I've made the engine work for a living or it's very hot and humid out, but then it's on for less than 30 seconds. Pulling some hills in central Texas last summer, it would cycle every 5 minutes or so while going up hill. Unloaded, never had it come on at highway speeds.
