Starter??

So I get ready to leave the house this morning, and ole part time faithful let me down. I turn the key, let my extremely loud fuel pump run for almost a minute which is normal, and required to start. When I turn the key to "crank", I get the loud sound of what appeared to be a starter issue. I immediately let go of the key for fear of extra damage and it scared me as well. I hit the key again and it sounded as if the system was "bogged". Its hard to explain that. I went and ran a few errands and return to give it another try. I turn to key to the run position, wait on the light to go off and the fuel pump to stop priming, then hit it to crank. It sounds like a high speed drill being held up in the air. I assume its the bendix not engaging? Hope its not a fly wheel issue. Hope its a super easy and cheap fix. Ideas before I start part swapping? This site is always helpful.
