fuel economy

Alright here is what i have.. 03 f 250 mods are the edge juice with attitude and k and n big filter.. I was getting 19.5 on the highway with rpms around 2. on vacation i was talked into cutting off the stock muffler and cat. they were replaced with an aero diesal muffler. Was told by shop its supposed to help by flowing better and was supposed to get better mpg. I went from 19.5 mpg down to 16.6 avg.. why did this happen should i put a cat back on. would this help with back pressure and bring my milage back a little.. did notice an increase in power but not worth the loss of mpg in todays fuel prices to me.. so all you smart people what should i do

That seems very odd to drop that quickly. Just gotta ask though, were you towing? When were th fuel filters last changed? etc....
