2003 6.0l power stroke grinding noise on drivers side engine compartment.

Hello everyone. Has anyone experienced this problem? While towing a 33ft. 5th. Wheel over the mountains, my 6.0l Powerstroke started making a grinding noise on the drivers side engine compartment. While it made this sound, it would black smoke out the tail pipe. I would let off the petal a little then it would stop. Their are no oil or coolant leaks anywhere which leads me to believe it would be an air noise. Temp. needle was not moving at all. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
