Noisy tapping engine

I know these engines are noisy and have all kinds of sounds coming from them but lately im hearing a tapping sound and its getting worse. At first I thought its getting louder because im looking for it but my wife also hears it. The truck has around 86,000 miles on it and it seems premature to have these kind of issues inside the motor. It sounds like a lifter or exhaust leak but im not sure. I hope im not facing major problems to come. Im about due for a oil change so maybe that's the problem, hell I don't know..

does it make the noise at an idle and seem to go away or get a lot quieter when you get on the throttle?

I've been having the same problem for about 6 months now. Sometimes its quiet tapping and other times very loud. I can't find any reason for it. I've changed oil several times using synthetic, various viscosities, etc but I'm back to Rotela 15w40. Nothing helped. I'm anxious to fix it. I have a late 2004 6.0 Excursion with 169k miles. The injectors on one side have been changed, head studs done, oil cooler rebuilt.

You can hear it when its idling and when your driving it. Today I changed the fuel filters and oil ( Rotela 15w40 ) and noticed its definitely coming from the passengers side, its loud. I was hoping it was trash in a lifter but that doesn't seem to be the problem. I have had this truck for over 3 years and this is definitely louder than normal.

Take the engine apart, yea that's a good one your a funny man... lol ... I dropped the truck off yesterday and today they called to tell me the problem was my belt tensioner and my belt was toast. I wasn't sure how a belt tensioner and belt would cause that much noise but they were right. Picked the truck up earlier and WOW what a difference, my truck no longer sounds like I have baseball cards in the spokes....
