Nasty stuff in the De-gas bottle

Hey guys I recently bought a truck that had a head gasket failure. 1000 miles ago it was studded and egr removed at a local shop that does good work. The radiator was also replaced at this time because it was not flowing. The heads were machined and reused. Now at approx. 1000 miles later I have a ton of sludge in the surge tank, I am wondering if this could be residual junk out of the motor? Or could it be that they didn't clean the surge tank?! Or could I have another blown head gasket, I did notice the truck was a little low on oil.. It has black onyx head gaskets from the xdp package. 117k miles on truck. Oil cooler was said to be replaced at this time as well.

Not a good sign whatsoever. How low on oil are you talking ??
The B/O gaskets have a bad track record.

I would take it back to the shop that did the work and start asking questions. If you have it tuned I would put it back to stock. Even if it's residual it will need flushing with acid or most likely Cascade to get it out of the cooling system.
Sorry about the bad news.

Chocolate pudding?
If so, it is a blown oil cooler. The oil is leaking into the cooling system.
You now have to rip that out, replace it, flush the cooling system with simple green or a similar product, and it would be a good idea to replace all the rubber components in your cooling system. They will leach oil and the oil will cause them to fail.
You SERIOUSLY need a monitor on your truck. Minimum would be monitoring the engine oil temp and engine coolant temps.
By the way, the black onyx head gaskets do not have a very good track record. The best head gaskets are stock. The issue with them blowing has absolutely nothing to do with the head gasket material.

The truck had the oil cooler replaced at the time of this failure as well.. On the on the invoice to the previous owner, however none of the hoses were replaced.. I am really just hoping for residual oil.. I work in at a heavy duty truck dealer so I know all about these kinds of failures.. and I cannot monitor specific temps being that I have no programmer or gauges. However I am going to flush it tomorrow the way we do DD15's and run water and flush through it for a couple days as well as clean the surge tank.

Prolly gonna need an oil cooler for sure after the flush. Gonna break all that gunk up and the cooler will catch it. Need a coolant filter also.

Honestly I am going to be patient with this one, because my dip stick was broke as well and I got with my buddy who also has an 04 and checked the oil and it was not low. I really do think they did not wash the surge tank out.. I know they pull the cab to do heads and no where in the story does it say they washed it out?!? Anyways I have a hard time believing an oil cooler will fail in 1000 miles.. if it does this truck is on its way out as soon as it came in.. there are better options if that's so. But I am going to clean the de gas and run a flush with new coolant and within a week do a filter. I will update from there.

I would use Cascade myself along with a coolant filter once done.
I'd B mighty scared of anything stronger.
These engines should all have a coolant filter on them.
