6.0l starter issue

So do to a few different factors my truck has sat for a little longer than I had anticipated. Recently I went out and got the truck ready to start but when I turned the key all I heard was the starter spinning up but not engaging. I've had this problem before on 302 v8's and usually a couple blows from a hammer while your trying to start it will get the starter to engage, no such luck with my truck however. So I'm assuming I need to pull the starter. Or is there some trick I'm not aware of? If I do pull it is there something I can try or am I in need of a new starter? Also if it does come down to a bad starter I've heard I should steer clear of aftermarket units. Any truth to this? And does anyone know the best deal on a new starter?

How long have you been running with that starter?
