rattling noise from engine

Recently noticed a rattling noise coming from the engine...sounds like valves rattling in a gas engine...does it at idle and when moving...do not notice it all the time, about 80% of time...any ideas?

what kind of truck? Miles? outside temp? Mine has a slight "rattle" when cold at startup and for the first 10-15 min then goes a way

The truck is a 2006 6.0L F-250 Crew Cab FX4. Has 48,000 miles on it. The truck is in Florida so the weather is not that cold...coldest truck has seen is 33 degrees. The rattle is pretty much all of the time. Sounds like valves rattling in a gas motor. I have noticed a knocking when it is cold a few times. Check oil and it is where it should be. This is my first diesel so still learning. My guess is it is the valves...but should the valves be rattling like that? Do diesel valves make the same noise gas valves make? I know running poor quality gasoline in a gas motor will make the valves rattle. Does the 100,000 mile engine warranty cover having the motor inspected?

I would think the 100,000 mile engine warranty would cover that but don't hold me to it.Take it in

Anyone think this could be from some bad diesel? Or maybe bad oil?

I had the same problem with mine, it sounded like a gas engine with bad valves. I do believe I had a tank of bad fuel, but it persisted for a while. I added some Diesel Power Services cleaner, and it went away. Clogged injector maybe? I don't know, but it's fixed now.

I would say it sounds like injectors is your problem and you just need to get a good quality fuel additive.

sounds like the injector knock you get from #8 starving for fuel its common and somewhat normal only way to really cure it is a regulated return kit or cross connect fuel rail kit
